Our grade 2 students were excited to learn about the intricacies of a plant. Especially when they were provided a real world context by assigning small groups the job of planting and maintaining their own lima bean plant pod. In this All About Plants introduction mini unit, the children learned about the plant life cycle, parts of a flower, photosynthesis and pollination. After a few days and weeks we discussed and journaled why some of our lima bean plants did not survive: lack of sunlight, over-watering, not enough water…
This mini unit helped the students to realize why we need plants. To witness their “ah-ha!” moment when they realized their desks, chairs, pencils, paper, etc. was made from trees was gratifying. The kiddos especially liked making and playing with their “cootie catchers!”
MATERIALS: Some of the unit activities require crayons, glue, pencil, and scissors
